Wilhelmina Park, Oudwijk and Utrecht East

The Wilhelminapark is a really classy neighborhood of Utrecht. It is located on the east side of the city, hence the present name Utrecht East and is still a chic and distinguished neighborhood!

The Wilhelmina Park

The park, which gave its name to the district, was created around 1898 in honor of the inauguration of Queen Wilhelmina in the same year.
It is laid out in English landscape style with a beautiful pond. The now old trees make it a Impressive big park . And what you wouldn't expect, there are a few tarmac cycle paths running through it that are used a lot.

Just before you enter the park, there is a small church on a hidden square; the English Church, The Holy Trinity Church. With beautiful stained glass windows. Naturally, many English-speaking visitors come here.

Utrecht East
At the end of the 19th century, the district was built with large, imposing houses. Many professors and doctors used to live there and they often practiced at home. A live-in maid was therefore very self-evident. The district changes unnoticed into Oudwijk. On the territory of a former Abbey of which nothing can be found anymore.

The old hospitals
Now these large houses have often been turned into offices or apartments.
Even the former Antonius Hospital on Prins Hendriklaan was converted into homes and a part into a rehabilitation center:
"De Hoogstraat"
The remodeling of the hospitals, which were formerly located in the city, to another destination was done on a large scale. Only the Deakonessenhuis remains. But also that one has been renovated on a large scale, nothing of the old is left. Only a small piece of the garden, but how long will that last?

Tip from Nelleke
Opposite the former Heilige Hartkerk (also converted into apartments) is a beautiful Rosarium. An old fashioned, classic rose garden. Beautiful place for a quiet moment.

Nelleke.
